Joy in our marriage

Are we walking in joy in our marriage or are we cranky and sort of miserable? Now I realize that sometimes a marriage might just be difficult or even downright horrible. Hopefully those are the exceptions. For most of us, we have loving husbands who work hard to walk with the Lord and make our marriages work.

The question is: are we walking in joy?

Have you ever been around someone who is a Joy Killer? The expression on their face, their body language, the words coming from their pursed lips … all of it expresses dissatisfaction and discouragement.

Is that how WE live in our marriages? If I were to ask all of our husbands, would they say that being around us was their biggest joy or their biggest chore? Do we excite them in being married to us or do we discourage them?

  • I have hard times
  • I have a lot of work to do
  • my life is not easy
  • you just don’t understand

Yeah, that’s probably true, I DON’T know your life. BUT I DO KNOW GOD!

No matter how stressful things can be, He is always there to help us walk in joy! “The joy of the Lord is your strength” has been my life verse these past 18 years. I have learned so much (and still have so much more to learn) about letting the joy of the Lord be my strength for all the tough times. When our marriages are struggling, when we are not communicating well, when the finances are seeming to drown us, when there is no job on the horizon, when the children seem out of control, when we are ill, when … God STILL desires to give us HIS joy and help us learn to let that joy carry us through.

…on that day they offered great sacrifices and rejoiced because God had given them great joy, even the women and children rejoiced, so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard from afar. Neh 12:43

So today, look at your life, at your marriage. Is the joy of the Lord filling your heart today and is your husband reaping the benefit of that joy? Is your joy being heard from afar?

  1. I love it- “yes I don’t know your life…but I do know God!” THAT IS SO TRUE- God is the SAME no matter what and His Word never changes. We can be joyful no matter what we are experiencing. AND we can be joyful in our obedience and submission in our family life.
