Today I was reading in Isaiah 14 and looking particularly at verses 13-14 concerning Satan:
“But you said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God, And I will sit on the mount of assembly In the recesses of the north. ‘I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.'”
Chuck Smith talks about the “5 I Wills” of Satan – the 5 things in his plan to achieve the power and authority of God. Those 5 I Wills were his downfall…prefaced by a heart of pride and arrogance. Isn’t it interesting that the goal that was his downfall, to be “like the Most High” was the very temptation that led to man’s destruction in the garden?
“For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” Gen 3:5
That desire to be like God has been plaguing us ever since.
The reality is that God created us IN HIS IMAGE! We WERE intended to be LIKE God. The difference between God’s intent and Satan’s intent is this: Satan’s goal has always been to usurp God, to BE God. This is what he tempted Eve (and us in generations to come) with — to take the role of God onto our own shoulders, to be our own god over our own lives.
God, on the other hand, gave us the gift of being a REFLECTION of who He is. We were created in His very image. But He goes even beyond that.
For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren…Rom 8:29
He calls us to TRULY be like Him.
- Satan desires the power of God.
- God offers us the character of God.
But what is at the heart of it all? Where does that character of God come from? RELATIONSHIP with Him!
And with that sweet relationship, with that godly character, God actually does give us power. Interestingly enough, the power He gives us is over the very one who seeks to overthrow the Almighty One.
It reminds me of Solomon. God came and offered him anything he wanted. Talk about an open-ended gift! And Solomon chose an understanding heart to lead God’s people with wisdom. He chose the CHARACTER of God. This was pleasing in God’s sight. He granted Solomon’s request but He also gave him much more than he ever asked for.
Do YOU want to be like God? Don’t seek to grab power and authority and autonomy apart from God like the enemy does.
Do you want to be like God? Look to His Son…let His character, heart and love fill you. Let His very Spirit overflow you and change you. Let His Word transform your mind. Let Him conform you into His image. Do it God’s way, in intimate relationship with Him, and gain life!
