Day 4 of Giving Thanks

I will give thanks to the LORD according to His righteousness
And will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High. Ps 7:17

When we think of God’s righteousness, we generally think of his holiness, his purity, his sinlessness. But the Hebrew word tsedeq really has more of a meaning of justice, of what is right and just.

Are we delighting in the justice of God? Do we believe that when He brings down a judgment that it IS righteous? Do we recognize when God judges a person or a nation that it is the RIGHT and HONORABLE thing to do?

In our culture of tolerance I think we have come to think that justice is harsh and unloving, that the RIGHT thing to do is to accept every one and every thing. But this is the world’s mind and not God’s mind.

The judgments of the LORD are true; they are righteous altogether. Ps 19:9b

I look at the evil in the world – those who have surrendered to that evil and let it dictate their lives – and my heart breaks. It breaks, not just for those whose lives are ruined by their evil deeds, but also for the ravages in their own lives.

But even while my heart breaks for them on the one hand, I delight in the just judgments of God in these situations. Knowing that God’s judgments are based on His righteous character; that everything He does is good and holy and perfect and impartial, fills me with confidence and trust. He is not a vigilante with a personal vendetta, He is an unbiased and righteous judge.

I give thanks, oh Lord, according to YOUR righteousness.
