I’ve been meditating on Psalm 103.

Are we setting up memorials as reminders to us of who God is?I also know it as a song so it makes meditating on it just a little bit easier. But I was struck by verse 2:

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget none of His benefits…

Then it goes on to list blessing after blessing after blessing. The more I read, the more encouraged I became. And the more I began to add in my own blessings – things He’s done for me personally. And it struck me: we are a forgetful people.

We get so bogged down in our little lives, in our small circumstances and forget who we are in the grand scheme of eternity. Our lives here are but a drop in a bucket, we are a grain of sand among millions and millions. In our plot of time and space, we are miniscule compared to all of creation past, present and future.

But in our tiny space of life, God gives us significance. God bestows on us importance and meaning and purpose. But we are never in the center, we are never the core. That is God’s place – the place of honor and preeminence.

So why are we so quick to forget?

If God is in the center, you’d think we would always be totally focused on Him and latching on to His coattails. Well, our human minds really have a hard time thinking in terms of eternity. We really do have a hard time getting outside of ourselves. We live so much inside our own heads; seeing life only through our eyes.

But God doesn’t chastise us for that. He does, however, tell us that we need to actually set physical objects to remind us. Remember Uncle Billy in It’s a Wonderful Life? He always had strings tied around his fingers to remind him of things. Granted, he was a bit forgetful and he often forgot what those strings were for, but the image is right.

We, too, are a forgetful people.

  • We need reminders of who God is, of what is His mighty deeds were and are.
  • We need to be spurred on by the promises of God and His faithful fulfillment of His promises.
  • We need reminders in the Word.
  • We need physical reminders around us.
  • We need to be reminded by one another.
  • We need to “forget none of His benefits.”

Calling for testimonies!

I am praying that the Lord will give me creativity on how to create my own memorials for His goodness and blessings in my life. Will it be a concrete wall? Will it be rocks and stones? Will it be altars? Will it be plaques and artwork? I don’t know. But I do know that I need things to remind me DAILY of His benefits in my life. I don’t ever want to forget who He is and what He has done for me and in me!

I would like to call you to come and share a testimony of God’s benefits to your life. It can be long past, it can be recent or current. Let us spur one another in our faith. Let us strike that spark of hope and longing in each other’s hearts. Let’s be a part of all of creation to bless the Lord:

Bless the Lord, you His angels…
Bless the Lord, all you His hosts…
Bless the Lord, all you works of His…

Bless the Lord, O my soul!
