Living in a non-royal country, we don’t often think about the term Sovereign. In England, the Queen is the Sovereign: the monarch, the supreme ruler (well, in theory anyway). But what does that tell us about God and His being Sovereign?
For some, this is a fearful thing. It means that God can do whatever He wants, and they feel at His mercy. If He were a ruler like human rulers, it WOULD be frightening for everyone! But Jehovah is not a man with a power-hungry agenda. Our Great I AM is love, incarnate. He is a ruler with all knowledge and lives outside of time. He knows the end from the beginning, He knows the depths of our hearts and He has a final plan for it all – and for us.
For me, the most important thing about God’s sovereignty is that He is trustworthy . <–tweet this
- I can trust that He has it all under control.
When I feel like my life is falling apart, when I’M falling apart, He is always totally in control. And He has my life in His hands. But this power, this authority, this sovereignty is in the character of love, in the heart of compassion, grace and mercy.
- I can trust God with my children (NOT an easy thing for a mom to do).
He knew from the beginning who I was, the mistakes and messes I would make as a mom, yet in His sovereignty He gave ME to my children as a mom. It was part of His plan for THEIR lives as well as mine. Part of what He planned to do in their lives to transform them into the image of His Son, and His goal was to use me (and all my foibles) to be a part of that transformation.
- I can trust that He is changing me to be more like Jesus every day.
He justified me (made me righteous) by the atoning work of the blood of Jesus – and that is magnificent and enough to shout HALLELUJAH! But He goes beyond that. He works daily in my life, through the power of the Word and His Spirit, to convict, instruct, deliver, and transform me. Like a caterpillar metamorphosing into a butterfly, the changes often go unseen, beneath the surface, but they are all part of His sovereign plan!
Do you not know? Have you not heard?
The Everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth
Does not become weary or tired.
His understanding is inscrutable. Is 40:28
He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords… 1Tim :151
And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.” Rev 19:16
This sovereign ruler we follow is the Wonderful Magnificent Lord of the universe – the King of Kings. And I am so thankful for having a sovereign Lord who is trustworthy, faithful and true.

Oh yes! He is totally trustworthy and does have it under control. I know what you mean about trusting Him with our kids though, lol! Sometimes I have wanted to “help” Him, hahaha! But it’s also such a relief to know that I can entrust my kids into his care when they are out and about in this world. Thanks for hosting today!
Oh that was a big one for me early on. And has become again as they grow up and I may not agree with their decisions. But Praise the Lord, He is trustworthy STILL! Thanks for coming by, dear.
Kate this was an excellent post on the Attributes of God. I especially appreciated it. Thanks for hosting your party today. I will be praying that your outreach is a blessing this week.
Judith, thanks for the prayer! I’m really feeling tuckered these past few months, more than usual, and I have no oomph. Fortunately, I have children!! 😀
Great word, as always, Kate! I also wanted to say I love the new link-up method…SO EASY!!!
Thanks, Nancy. You know I finally got to actually USE it on another site today. I’ve used the code for a bit but never actually posted something by it. So glad it was easy for you!
Kate, I loved this post. I needed this today. I needed to hear that God is in control, no matter what is going on in this undependable, changing world around us. God is over all, and nothing surprises Him. Your words filled me with peace, after reading the news and feeling so much apprehension. Jesus said not to let our hearts be troubled, but sometimes it is hard when we are so bombarded with negativity and pessimism. Thank God, His Word is always filled with hope. I am so glad I stopped here for the link-up today. You ministered to me in a profound way. Thank you for your faithfulness to God and all He is calling you to do. Love, Cheryl
Cheryl, praise the Lord! Thank you for your sweet words and I’m so delighted that the Lord brought you courage and encouragement today. Blessings to you, dear! So glad you got to come by.
