Scripture is very clear that God is The Creator. In 6 days He designed and created the entire universe; every species of plant and animal life. Just Google unique and unusual animals and you can find some extraordinarily beautiful and dazzling creatures. He is the creative Creator!
How many are your works, Lord!
In wisdom you made them all;
the earth is full of your creatures.
There is the sea, vast and spacious,
teeming with creatures beyond number—
living things both large and small.
There the ships go to and fro,
and Leviathan, which you formed to frolic there.
All creatures look to you
to give them their food at the proper time. Ps 104:24-27
Webster’s defines creative as:
- having the ability to create
- characterized by originality of thought; having or showing imagination
Because we are made in His image, we have the capacity for creativity!
This is such a huge deal for me! I look at my life and I realize that I am not a creative person. I am a copier. I am intelligent enough to know that I can see what others do and copy it.
- I see a craft design and I can duplicate it.
- I see a card design and I can modify it.
- I see a bedroom design and I can recreate it.
What I don’t do well is to come up with the idea on my own. I have children who are very creative. They draw, they create games, they visualize great composition for photos, they write stories, they write music, they develop new card tricks. THEY are showing the creative nature of our God (and they get their talent from their Dad’s side). For years I used to get frustrated thinking this was an area of God’s image that didn’t get passed on to me. But I was wrong!
By His Spirit, I can tap into His creative nature, even if it isn’t a talent of my own.
This excites me! It means I can rest in the power, the creative power of the God of the Universe. I can ask the Lord to put His creative ideas into my head. When I am designing a website or an organizational plan, it all requires God’s creativity to make it more than just functional. I believe that God delights in His beauty and creativity being displayed through the course of our lives. And I can ask for Him to pour some of it into my mind. Very often He does!
Of course there are those, like my children, who have had His creative insights given to them from birth. Those should be the ones who stand above the rest. They have been given much and their calling is to glorify Him through their talents. How that glory reveals itself is not for me to say. All I know is that when I see, hear or experience it, I am enriched by the image of God on display.
Then Moses said to the sons of Israel, “See, the LORD has called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah.
“And He has filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding and in knowledge and in all craftsmanship;
to make designs for working in gold and in silver and in bronze,
and in the cutting of stones for settings and in the carving of wood, so as to perform in every inventive work.
“He also has put in his heart to teach, both he and Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan.
“He has filled them with skill to perform every work of an engraver and of a designer and of an embroiderer, in blue and in purple and in scarlet material, and in fine linen, and of a weaver, as performers of every work and makers of designs. Ex 35:30-35
His Creation is very good.
We can delight in His Creation, in His creativity. It is an attribute of who He is and He shares it with us: His Creation. How is He displaying His creativity in you?
