Putting on Martha

Martha Time

Bedrooms. Our bedrooms are absolutely OUT OF CONTROL!!  I need some Martha in our bedrooms.

My bedroom is the Dump Site of the house; the place where everything and anything that we have no place for gets put. I desperately need to help the boys to get their room organized and to get my own room organized. I already helped one daughter clear out a previous daughter’s leftovers so she can actually FIT into the room.

A major problem we have with bedrooms are the walls and floors. The plaster walls are falling apart. One bedroom actually has about 7 holes in the plaster (as in the size of books). My room has paper on top of paper and it is all peeling. I have 1930s ‘oil cloth’ on my floor covered by an area rug that has seen better days. The boys have soft floorboards with a couple of patched holes in them (not sure if they were vents or what) and an area rug that covers very little area. The girls’ room has carpet that is like one large pill ball and has no padding.

I always feel that they are so incredibly ugly that, no matter what, you can never tell how tidy and organized the bedrooms are.

BUT that will not stop me from getting them thoroughly organized this year!

I will start first with the boys’ room. 3 boys in 1 small-ish room CAN become a place of order. I think it can, I think it can, I think it can! This week, we’ll begin with the closet and dresser.

  • pare down the amount of clothes
  • hang all shirts
  • clean out shelves in closet and resort toys/games
  • get rid of dress-up clothes (this will be a traumatic thing for ALL our children as they still do plays and use the dress-up clothes for costumes)
  • organize all dresser drawers

I’d love to hear your suggestions and thoughts. Help me Put on Martha.

I had a Martha moment yesterday when Tony and I overhauled our bedroom (which is like yours in that it collects anything that doesn’t have a place. We actually vacuumed and dusted (dusting is not a skill that I practice much) But now that it is clean it is the place I want to hang out :D — our biggest challenge is going to be cleaning and organizing my girls room (who are practicing for a future appearance on “Hoarders”)I will be following any comments that have suggestions as cleaning/downsizing their things is going to be traumatic as well :/

  • I know how it is fitting kids into small rooms. Do you use underbed storage? It’s a good way to store out of season clothes, grow-into clothes and large games and toys. Hanging shelves on the walls could help to. Our spaces might not be beautiful, but we can at least keep them looking as clean and tidy as possible! Good luck!

  • hi, i don’t live up to your definition of “martha”, but it’s the name i was born with. here’s my suggestion: start w your room! it is the heart of your home! maybe it isn’t the place where all the junk needs to land! why not get your room fixed, together and in order? you might find out that a lot of other things will fall into place as a result.

for some reason, it sounds more humble and caring to put everyone else first, especially our kids, but the basic unit of the family is the husband and wife. b/f the kids, it was the husband and wife and after the kids grow up…husband and wife unless death interrupts. consider fixing up your room, find a good place for storage either there or somewhere else and know you will have a place to retreat together.

meanwhile, having the kids declutter their rooms and start learning to keep their rooms picked up will help prepare them for the time when their room is more fixed up.

when flooring needs to be replace, that can be done in more than one room at the same time…there are often specials when more than one room is done…good to check out.

btw, doing major decluttering and having a garage sale to bring in cash to help pay for the work you want to do might motivate people to get rid of more things…as well as the work to get them in shape to put on the garage sale! yes, it is work, but if you do it well, you can bring in some decent cash:)
