Homemade deodorant

Well, I’ve been dying to try this for some time but hadn’t been able to find arrowroot flour! Finally I found it yesterday and I made my own natural homemade deodorant.

I’ve used natural brands before (several brands, in fact) and found they did NOTHING to stop the body odor. In fact, the body odor mixed with the fragrance of the deodorant was quite dreadful. So, those expensive products were ditched in favor of the traditional brands. I really wanted to get away from the aluminum products used in anti-antiperspirants, though.

About 3 weeks ago I found several sites with recipes for homemade deodorant made with natural ingredients. I read glowing recommendations on how well they worked to stop odor and I just wanted to try them. Several used cornstarch while others used arrowroot flour. There were several who said they specifically preferred arrowroot flour, so I wanted to try with that one.

Granted, I only have one day to judge from but I am really liking this new deodorant! Already I can tell the difference in how this works. I’m very happy. Now, I’ll have to revisit the topic later on to make sure that I’m not finding any down side. But Passionate Homemaking is the one I found first and there is a video tutorial (not that it is necessary, there are only 3 ingredients).

I used:

1/4 c baking soda
1/4 c arrowroot flour
5-6 T coconut oil (I used extra virgin organic) — and in my kitchen, it was a liquid which made mixing easier! Coconut oil liquifies at 76 degree.

Mix all together (you may add 10-15 drops of an essential oil, some suggest tea tree oil, but I used lavender/vanilla) and store in a sealed container. Rub a small amount on your armpits until the oil is absorbed.

Enjoy!
